Clean & Simple Mugs Cori Nichols Ceramic Studio Workshop Class of 2020 This was my third-semester taking ceramics. Since I had two other semesters where I was exposed to different ceramics techniques I had an idea of what I wanted to create this year. Last year I wanted to reach my goal and create mugs and this year I wanted to expand and perfect that idea. As soon as I started creating for the show I knew what I had to do, it wasn’t my first time making mugs so it should be easy, right? Even though I had spent a whole semester before creating mugs I still had lots of areas of improvement. I still was not very fortunate at making the handles of mugs, specifically the form and shape. I decided early that I could make my mugs with all different types of handles, and bring all my pieces together with a similar glaze. The different types of handles I was thinking about was braiding the handles. As soon as I was ready to start creating the handles I was challenged, they were not turning out how I wanted them to at all. So I had to rethink my show idea, instead of creating unique handles I tried to make plan handles but make them as flawless as possible. Then for the glaze, I wanted to make the mugs look clean and simple. The half white and half color with the speckles caught my eye when I was looking for inspiration, and I knew that is what I was going to go with. I am proud that I was able to create 13 mugs in such a short period of time successfully. Even though I hit some bumps, I am glad I figured out other ways to make things happen and I’m satisfied with the way my show turned out!
